Using standard household electrical tape in a hot engine compartment is a guaranteed recipe for a sticky, melted disaster. You must choose a tape engineered for specific thermal and environmental conditions.

Understanding Tape Substrates
The performance of a wire harness tape is largely determined by its “substrate” – the base material that the adhesive is applied to.
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Standard electrical tape is made of PVC. It is excellent for basic electrical insulation and moisture resistance. However, standard PVC melts at low temperatures. - Rubber-based adhesives: Offer high initial “tack” (stickiness) and are cheap, but they generally have poor resistance to high heat and engine oils.
- Acrylic-based adhesives: The gold standard for automotive wiring. Acrylic adhesives actually grow stronger over time and offer exceptional resistance to high temperatures, UV light, and automotive fluids.
